The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional league for men’s basketball franchises based in the United States. The NBA is one of the four major North American sports leagues, along with MLB, NFL and NHL. The league has an international presence as well, with games and shows broadcast in over 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages.

The league was founded in 1948 and currently has 30 teams. The league is split into two conferences, each with three divisions of five teams. The current divisional alignment was introduced in the 2004–05 season, reflecting the population distribution of the United States and Canada.

NBA teams compete with each other in 82 regular-season games to earn a playoff spot. The top six teams in each conference automatically qualify for the playoffs. Teams in positions 7–10 play a Play-In Tournament to determine the final playoff seeds. The Philadelphia 76ers are currently in eighth place in the Eastern Conference and without star player Joel Embiid, there is a good chance they will have to win the Play-In Tournament to secure a playoff berth.

The NBA has a salary cap, limiting the amount of money that teams can spend on player salaries. This helps maintain a competitive balance between the league’s teams and prevents the wealthiest teams from buying all the best players. NBA teams also have a draft system, which gives them the opportunity to select promising young players each year. In addition, the league has several other rules that help maintain fair competition.

In recent years, the NBA has expanded its global business, establishing offices and playing a number of exhibition games outside the United States. The league’s television rights are sold in over 200 countries and territories, and its games can be seen on satellite, cable, and digital platforms. The NBA has also been active in international marketing, with its teams participating in a variety of global events and charities.

Whether the NBA can sustain this momentum in the long run remains to be seen. The league faces competition from other sports, including the National Football League and college football. The NBA also has to compete with a growing number of digital and social media outlets, including TikTok channels dedicated to highlights of basketball games.

Despite these challenges, the NBA continues to attract viewers around the world. Its global reach and lucrative broadcasting deals allow the league to generate a significant income from outside of the United States. It has also invested in programs for young people and increased its focus on important markets like India. Its inaugural In-Season Tournament has been well received by players and fans alike, so it could become a permanent feature of the NBA schedule. A popular In-Season Tournament would provide the league with another selling point when negotiating its next media rights contracts. As it stands, the NBA’s current deals expire in 2024–25.
