In order to win a game of football, a team must score more points than the opposing team by kicking or running the ball into their end zone. Most league competitions give winning teams three points while a tie earns both teams one point. A team may also earn extra points by kicking the ball through the goal post.

A game of football consists of four quarters, with each team taking turns playing offense and defense. Each offensive team has four chances to gain 10 yards, called downs. If a team fails to get 10 yards after four plays, they punt or kick the ball out of bounds. The defensive team attempts to stop the offense by tackling ball carriers, breaking up passes or interceptioning balls.

The offensive team consists of a quarterback, running backs and wide receivers. The quarterback throws the ball to the running backs for running plays or to the wide receivers for catch plays. The running backs take handoffs from the quarterback and block to open up running lanes. Wide receivers are known for their speed and can also block.

On the defensive side, there are three to six players who line up behind the defensive line. They try to rush the quarterback and break up passing attempts between their opponent’s quarterback and receivers. There are also cornerbacks, or safeties, who play in the secondary and try to cover receivers.

Playing football at any level requires a tremendous amount of stamina. In fact, just an hour of football can burn up to 700 calories. In addition, the quick movements and directional changes required in football improve balance and flexibility. These improvements can help with other activities in life.
