What You Need to Know About the NBA

About nba

The National Basketball Association is the premier professional basketball league in North America, with 30 teams across two conferences (East and West). Its players, coaches and staff are all paid a salary, and teams compete to win the NBA championship. It is a highly regulated sport, overseen by the NBA’s governing body.

This body is the NBA Board of Governors, which sets the rules for the game and approves changes. It is also responsible for ensuring the integrity of the game. The NBA also has a Collective Bargaining Agreement in place, which sets the terms of employment for players and the rights that belong to the NBPA and NBA clubs.

During the course of its 77-year history, the NBA has become one of the world’s most popular sports. It has produced legends such as Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain. The NBA continues to be a major draw around the world, both for its talented players and for the high stakes competition of the Playoffs.

The NBA season runs from late October to mid-April, with each team playing 82 games. The top eight teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs, and then play a series of best-of-seven games to determine the league champion for that year. The winners of each conference then meet in a best-of-seven series for the NBA Finals.

Each spring, the NBA holds a Draft Lottery to determine the order in which teams pick rookie talent for their rosters. The first three lottery balls determine the first, second and third picks, then teams choose in reverse order of their regular-season standings, with the last-place team choosing first. Teams may move up or down in the draft order with trades.

Besides the regular season, the NBA has several other events, including All-Star weekend in February, Summer league in July, and preseason games in October. The All-Star game is a showcase of the top players in the league. The NBA Finals are held each June, and the winner receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. The runner-up wins the Roberto Clemente Award.

While most NBA players are American, the NBA is beginning to see more international talent. This season, scoring champion Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is Canadian, rebounding champion Domantas Sabonis is from Lithuania, and blocked shots champion Victor Wembanyama is from France. This is the first time that players from five different countries have been statistical champions, and Gilgeous-Alexander could be joined by assists champion Dyson Daniels of Atlanta and steals champion Trae Young of the Hawks if they make it through the play-in tournament. Those four are just the tip of the iceberg, though; 44 different countries have had players score in the NBA this season.
