The Basics of Football

The field is 100 yards long and has a 10-yard end zone for each team. The playing area has stripes that run the width of the field at 5-yard intervals and shorter lines called hash marks.

In some countries, the field is also equipped with a fence, which is called a goalpost. This prevents the ball from bouncing off the side of the field.

A player can be sent off of the field for an infraction or for being injured during a play. Depending on the severity of the infraction, the team can be forced to forfeit that play or may have to restart the ball at its own 10-yard line.

There are other penalties that can be incurred during a game, too. For example, if the defense tackles an offensive ball carrier, the play is called a fumble. If the defense forces an offensive ball carrier out of bounds or if an offensive ball carrier commits certain penalties in his own end zone, the play is called a safety.
