The Basics of Football

Football is a game that pits teams of 11 players called the offensive and defensive team against each other in an attempt to advance the ball into the opponent’s end zone and score points. This goal can be achieved by either running or throwing the ball to a teammate who then takes it over the opponents goal line. If any part of the ball touches the end zone a touchdown is scored. Each play is called by an official who throws a flag to indicate any rules violations.

When a player is on the ground with their head down it is considered a fumble and the ball can be recovered by the opposing team. The team that gains possession of the ball after a fumble is said to have a turnover. There are also many other penalties that can be committed in the game such as a pass that goes out of bounds, an incomplete pass, or if a player is tackled in their own end zone.

In the beginning of a game there is a coin toss to determine which team will start with the ball. After that, the offensive and defensive teams will take turns taking possession of the ball. The ball is thrown back and forth between the teams until the other team scores. During each play, the offensive team must try to gain 10 yards or more. If they do, the first down is awarded and the next four downs reset. However, if the offensive team does not make 10 yards in four downs then they are turned over to the defence.

Each offensive team is allowed a maximum of 4 downs (or chances to gain 10 yards) to move the ball closer to the defensive team’s end zone. Once a down is earned, the ball is put into play by a snap from a center position on the line of scrimmage. One of the offensive players then passes (or “snaps”) the ball between his legs to another player, known as a receiver. The ball-carrier can then run forward to the end zone and touch the goal post to score a point.
