The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a men’s professional basketball league in the United States and Canada. The league has 30 teams in two conferences of three divisions each, based on population distribution. All teams play 82 regular season games, plus a best-of-seven playoff series to determine the champion of each conference and the overall NBA championship.

The NBA is the largest men’s professional sports league in North America in terms of revenue, and its teams are among the most popular in the world. The league is headquartered in New York City, and its teams play home games at arenas located throughout the United States and Canada.

Training camp begins in late September for the following regular season, which begins in October. The teams’ training camps give the coaching staffs an opportunity to evaluate new players and existing players, scout opponents, and prepare the team for its rigorous schedule. Teams also have the ability to assign players with less experience to their NBA G League affiliates.

In February, the regular season pauses for the annual All-Star Game. Fans vote throughout the United States, Canada, and on the internet to select the starting lineups for each team. The coaches then draft the remaining players into the game, with the top vote-getter earning first pick and so forth. The game has become famous for its highlight-reel plays, such as Jerry West’s 60-foot jump shot in the waning moments of Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals, which the Knicks won to break the Celtics dynasty.

After the All-Star Game, the playoffs begin with a series of round-robin groups where each team plays four games against its group rivals. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout round, where they play a best-of-seven series against one of the other top two seeds from their conference. The teams that win both the knockout and conference rounds advance to the NBA Finals, where the victors are awarded the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. All players and major contributors on the winning team—including coaches and general managers—receive a championship ring.

Each year, the league names the All-NBA team and awards a number of individual accolades, including Most Valuable Player and Coach of the Year. It also gives out the All-Defensive team, and honors a sixth man of the year who has played a large role on the bench for most of the season. The league has a global reach and is seeking to grow in emerging markets such as India, where it has partnered with Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh. It has more than 400 international branded stores, including the NBA Park in Brazil. Its media rights deals expire after the 2024-25 season, and a successful inaugural run of the In-Season Tournament could be a selling point when negotiations begin for the next deal. In the short term, the success or failure of the tournament will be determined by how well it draws viewers and fans to live games.
