The National Basketball Association (NBA) is an American professional league for men’s basketball. The league has 30 teams across the United States and Canada. The NBA was established in 1949 through the merger of the BAA (Basketball Association of America) and the NBL (National Basketball League). This was achieved by leveraging the BAA’s connections with large venues and the NBL’s superior athletes.

There are several ways for NBA teams to acquire new players. One way is through the NBA draft, which is held annually in June. The draft is a competition where the 30 NBA teams select their preferred rookie talent from an applicant pool. Any player who is 19 years old or older and has completed at least one year of secondary school or high school may apply to the NBA draft. The top vote-getters in each conference are then selected to be part of the All-Star Game, and coaches pick the rest of the starters.

Another way for teams to acquire new players is through free agency. This is a competitive process where teams attempt to sign players who will improve their chances of winning the championship. Free agents are usually able to negotiate their own contract terms, so some teams may offer more money than others.

After the All-Star break, the regular season resumes and each team plays 82 games over the course of a few months. During this time, teams monitor their stats to determine what their playoff position will be. In the past, teams could move players between franchises at any point throughout the year, but this is no longer the case. The trade deadline is typically around the 16th Thursday of the regular season, and it’s not unusual for major deals to be finalised just before that date.

There are a number of rules that govern the NBA, including what constitutes a ‘international player’. A ‘international player’ is defined as a person who was born outside the United States, but who is eligible to compete for the U.S. national team in international competition, such as the Olympics.
